Just as I did at St. Francis Jr. High, I also volunteered my time in the mornings at ESM for the Breakfast Club from September until the Christmas break. Other than preparing breakfast for the students that came each morning, we also prepared snacks for those without any at recess times, as well as the after school snack for FMNI students that had an extra long bus ride each afternoon out to the reservation. It was such a privilege to learn the ropes and work along side Mrs. Darlene Hooper. I will miss our morning conversations.

One of my favorite sports to play is volleyball. Although, I never played on a team during my school years, I have played recreationally as an adult. At ESM I was excited to hear that there would be volleyball program. It was such a great learning experience related to both the skills of the sport and as a coaching experience. I had the pleasure of learning from an expert in the field of varsity volleyball, Mr. Dan Monaghan. I helped out with the Gr. 5/6 girls group. All week ESM collected toonies to support the Terry Fox Foundation. Today we gathered for an assembly where a family member of Terry Fox (who was also a family member of one of our students) gave us a presentation on life of Terry Fox and the meaning behind the run. After the assembly we all headed to Henderson Lake to participate in the "run" portion of the fundraising efforts. It was a great event to support and also it allowed some time outside of the classroom to connect with other staff members and students, as well as my own students. Fun was had by all for a fantastic cause! I have had the pleasure, over the past couple months, of spending time with the students doing extracurricular activities. I arrived at SFJH early each day in order to assist Mrs. Woitte with the breakfast club. I really enjoyed getting know students in a different capacity. During the lunch hour, I also had the opportunity to assist, participate and observe the beading and drumming club. Both clubs had an FMNI focus, namely Blackfoot. I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of these groups. In beading club I even had the good fortune to make some beading myself. I loved making my key-chain. I was also so amazed at the creativity in original beading designs from the students. The principal was fundraising for the MOVEMBER movement of supporting research for prostate cancer and the whole school became involved. If students brought a loonie or donation in to support the cause a mustache was drawn on their face. Myself, along with a few other staff members also became involved in the fundraising efforts. It was fun to support a worthwhile cause and look silly with my students. |
